13-try romp to kick start Selby Warriors ARLC cup defence

Holders Selby Warriors ARLC reached round three of the Andrew Bennett Memorial Trophy with a 68-12 home win over Bowling ‘A’.

Warriors dominated from the start and led 38-6 at half-time before taking their try tally to 13 in the second period.

Chris O’Neil opened the scoring with a try in the corner and big prop Craig Askham crashed over under the posts and Gavyn Lightowler converted.

Bowling came back with a converted try, but man of the match Ben Pearson then ripped the Bradford men to shreds down the middle to touch down and Lightowler added extras.

O’Neill then raced away for two more tries to post a first half hat-trick, while stand-off Pearson crossed again.

Andrew Dobson and Askham carried the Warriors forward, along with Zenon Horrox and Kyle Jarrett in the second row and Scott Pearson at loose forward.

Substitute Steve Wilks was next to cross the whitewash, with Lightowler posting his fifth conversion before half-time.

Captain Wayne Fennell got in on the act in the second period with a hat-trick of tries.

Bowling pinched a converted try, but the Warriors kept up the momentum with tries by Matt Irving, full-back Ben Harris and hooker Lightowler, who also kicked eight conversions from 13 attempts.

Second-placed Selby Warriors ‘A’ were 34-6 winners at Rodley in division seven.
