HEWORTH ARLC returned to winning ways in Yorkshire Men’s League division one with a crushing 78-12 victory over Keighley Albion in sweltering conditions at Elmpark Way.

The romp involved a club record 11 conversions for Joe Deighton, overtaking the previous best of 10 set by former full-back Tony Carr against Oulton in the National Conference League on May 3, 1994.

Heworth and Albion had already met this year in the pre-season Forty-20 Cup, with the Villagers edging a close encounter 14-6.

It was a different story this time as the hosts produced a feast of attacking rugby to lead 46-6 at the break and go on to post a total of 14 tries while restricting the visitors to a solitary effort in each half.

The result left the Villagers at the top of the table with four wins from five.

Full-back and man-of-the-match Fraser West led the way with five tries, one of which was a fine individual effort with the other four resulting from excellent support play - backing up breaks by centre Adam Dent, who also notched one himself, and sibling Ben, the former York City Knights winger who was playing at stand-off on dual-reg from Betfred League One club Newcastle Thunder.

There was a brace of tries apiece for winger Cameron Taylor and scrum-half George Elliott along with touchdowns by wingman Jake Atkinson, debutant centre Brandon Harris, prop Josh Hughes and second-row Adam Speck.

Full-back Kris Gott and prop Anthony Chapman got the visitors’ tries, both goaled by stand-off Finlay Meegan.

York Acorn 'A' remained at the foot of the table, still awaiting their first win of term, after losing 34-22 at home to Cutsyke Raiders.

New Earswick All Blacks had no game in the premier division but their Academy team had a good day in division five, winning their York derby against Heworth 'A' 52-12.
