HEWORTH ARLC saw their play-off hopes disappear in Yorkshire Men's League division one despite a fine 36-26 success at Keighley Albion.

On a difficult sloping pitch and in hot conditions, the Villagers, playing uphill in the first half, held a slender 12-10 interval lead and, despite a spirited effort by the hosts, posted four tries in the second period to exert their superiority - debutant centre Ernest Peteuli the man of the match after bagging a solo brace.

However, both neighbours York Acorn 'A' and Odsal Sedbergh were handed walkover wins against Skirlaugh and West Hull respectively, meaning the Villages can no longer make the top four with one game left.

Third and fourth spots are now between Acorn, Odsal and Skirlaugh, with Acorn's last game against table-topping cross-city rivals New Earswick All Blacks.

Keighley went 10-0 up in the opening quarter of an hour with two tries by winger Kieron Blakely one converted by loose-forward Fin Meegan.

Heworth responded when scrum-half Liam Jackson dummied over from close range, player-coach George Elliott, playing at stand-off, adding the extras.

Three minutes later, Jackson sliced through on halfway and raced clear for his second try, Elliott converting from in front of the posts.

The remaining quarter was nip and tuck with both sides working hard to gain the ascendancy but failing to trouble the scoreboard.

The hosts retook the lead in the first minute of the second period after Heworth fumbled the kick off, substitute Lee Kelly crossing for a try, Meegan goaling.

But three minutes later Heworth responded when Peteuli burst through direct from acting-half and scorched 50 metres for an impressive touchdown improved by Elliott.

Jackson soon put Elliott over for a try which he goaled himself to make it 24-16.

Albion though refused to lie down and reduced the deficit to four points through second-rower Connor Meegan but Villagers centre Billy Sturdy shrugged off several defenders to touch down wide out and Elliott added an excellent conversion to up the advantage again.

Heworth put the game to bed eight minutes from time with Peteuli again blasting through to score from inside his own half, Elliott's sixth goal making it 36-20.

The home side had the final word with a consolation on the final whistle, sub Sam Cutler scoring and Kelly converting.
