HEWORTH made it two wins out of two in Yorkshire Mens' League division one with a 26-14 victory at Knottingley Worms.

In a tough encounter, the Villagers led 14-4 at the break and 20-4 after 50 minutes.

However, they had to dig in deep to withstand a spirited fightback by the Worms who got to within six points before Heworth sealed victory with a try five minutes from time.

Knottingley took the lead in the second minute following a knock on by Heworth in the first set of six tackles from the kick off.

From the resulting scrum, home centre Jimmy Brown went over for an unconverted try.

The Villagers levelled on 19 minutes with scrum half Liam Jackson sending second rower Liam Richmond over the line.

Seven minutes later, stand off Lewis Brown jinked his way in from close range to put Heworth 8-4 ahead.

On 35 minutes, player-coach George Elliott broke through on halfway and found Jackson in support who raced away to touch down close to the posts. Loose forward Joe Deighton added the extras to give Heworth a ten point lead at the interval.

It looked all over for the hosts when, ten minutes into the second period, another good break by Elliott left the home defence in tatters. He strode through from 45 metres to go over under the sticks. Deighton converted.

The Worms hit back in determined fashion on 58 minutes with Brown touching down for his second try of the afternoon.

Heworth's nerves were really jangling when the same player completed his hat trick eight minutes later and also tagged on the goal to reduce the deficit to six points at 20-14.

The Black and Whites, however, had the final word when - with only five minutes remaining - veteran front rower Wayne Foster sold an audacious dummy to crash over the line from 15 metres out. Deighton added to complete a 12 point victory.

Prop Mark Hayes was Heworth's man of the match.
