YORK Acorn booked a second round berth in the Ladbrokes Challenge Cup – but not before being made to work extremely hard by an enthusiastic RAF outfit.

It all started well for the blue and golds as they romped to an early 10-point lead.

On 13 minutes, after an Antony Chilton kick, Josh Thompson challenged for the ball which fell to Johnny Waldron who scooted over in the corner.

Four minutes later, from another kick, an RAF defender fumbled the ball and Ryan Gallacher was on hand to go over unopposed, with Chilton adding the goal.

The RAF got into the match and for long periods dominated territory. In fact, only resolute defence kept the forces outfit at bay as they managed several repeat sets in succession against the Acorn line.

With the play so one-sided it was inevitable that a score would come, and on the stroke of half-time centre Juite Tuplia got over on the overlap. With scrum half Adam Funtuam goaling, it was 10-6.

Acorn needed to start the second period well – and on 50 minutes Jake Calam scored a good try after an excellent angled run to the try line.

The blue and golds started getting more possession and controlling the game, and a superb line ran by Karl Harton saw the big second row gallop over unopposed, with Chilton goaling.

With the pressure eased, Matthew Woods came on to a short pass to crash over on 72 minutes.

Tim Stubbs then barged over from close range on 75 minutes and Chilton goaled to end the scoring from an Acorn perspective.

The remainder of the half was dominated by the RAF, who played to the final whistle and got there rewards on 78 minutes when stand off Liam Bradley side-stepped his way over.

Funtuam goaled for a final score of 30-12 to the blue and golds.
