SELBY Warriors welcomed Beeston to the Constant Power sports field, needing a win to climb the Pennine League division four table.

The clash was pretty even for the first ten minutes until the referee decided to sin bin Mark Hanson for questioning a decision.

The official then decided to kick the ball for some strange reason and as Selby’s Jack Townend caught it he play-acted as if he was running the full length of the field – only to be sent to the sin bin as well!

This meant Selby were down to 11 men for 10 minutes and would have to dig deep to keep Beeston at bay,

The home defence held firm for set after set on their line but finally caved, and Beeston went over to take a six-point lead.

This sparked Selby into life and the returning Hanson and Andy Rowe took two quick drives to get them up the field, allowing Ben Morris to crash over. Jack Greensmith converted and the scores were all square.

Beeston were next on the scoresheet to make it 6-12, but Selby worked their way upfield with good work from Danny Greenwood, the returning Ben Coupland and Fatayi Okateti to allow Harry Bennison to sneak over in the corner from a Townend pass. Greensmith converted once again.

An off-the-ball incident saw Rowe shown a red card, reducing Selby to 12 men for the remainder of the game.

With half-time approaching, Beeston managed to crash over under the posts and hold an 18-12 lead at the break.

Selby's strong start to the second period paid dividends with a sweeping move which ended with Hanson crashing over out wide and Greensmith converting.

Warriors added two further quick tries – firstly from young Bennison who raced 40 metres to score before Greenwood dived over for another converted try to give Selby a 30-18 advantage.

Back came Beeston though, as the visitors clawed it back to 30-30 within five minutes.

The game was in the balance, but up stepped Selby's Tom Kilgar, who threw two outrageous dummies to crash over. The conversion made it 36-30 in the hosts' favour.

And despite some nervous moments in the closing stages, Selby held on to a precious victory ahead of this weekend's trip to Slaithwaite Saracens.
