Rugby League fans in York are being invited to support a dinner celebrating the career of one of the city’s most famous players, Mick Sullivan.

The Rugby League Hall of Fame member died in April aged 82 and the sport will come together to remember his glittering career at a star-studded gala dinner on Tuesday July 12 at the Willerby Manor Hotel near Hull.

Sullivan played 44 times for York between 1963 and 1965, scoring 12 tries, towards the twilight of a record-breaking career.

He remains Great Britain’s most capped player, representing his country 46 times, a record he shares with Garry Schofield, with the last of those appearances coming during his time at Clarence Street. He scored 31 times for the Lions.

Twice a World Cup winner in 1954 and 1960, Sullivan also played each Test in the Ashes-winning series of 1956, 1958, 1959 and 1962.

During the 1958 tour, he scored a record 38 tries in 19 appearances.

Schofield, who was inducted into the Hall of Fame alongside Sullivan in 2013, will be among the guests at the dinner, which has been organised by the sport’s charity, Rugby League Cares.

The dinner will also celebrate the career of Roger Millward MBE, the former Hull KR and Great Britain stand-off and RL Hall of Fame inductee who died last month, aged 68.

Proceeds from the dinner will go to the Rugby League Cares Reunions programme, which helps former players stay connected with the sport and provides assistance to players who are enduring hardship, illness and distress.

The head of RL Cares, Chris Rostron, said: “We know from speaking to the Sullivan family that Mick had nothing but fond memories of his time at Clarence Street and it would be great to see his old club represented at the dinner.

“The Hall of Fame features the 'best of the best' in this great sport and it says much about the high regard in which Mick Sullivan was held that he is one of only 25 players to join this most exclusive club since 1895.

“Many York fans will also have fond memories of the exploits of Roger Millward and the dinner is the perfect opportunity to come along and remember two of the greatest players Rugby League has ever seen.”

Tickets cost £40 per head, or £375 for a table of 10, and include three-course dinner and entertainment. The dress code is lounge suits. To book please contact Katie Irwin at Rugby League Cares on katharine.irwin@RLCares.org.uk or call 07540 636515.
