YORK Acorn ARLC's 'A' team are hoping to bag two pieces of silverware in five days - and give coach Leigh Paul-Rientoul the perfect send-off.

Paul-Rientoul recently took over first-team reins after Scott Rhodes stepped down, but he will stay in charge of the reserves as they play the Yorkshire Men's League's Forty-20 Cup final tomorrow night followed by the York & District Cup final next Wednesday.

Beverley are the opponents tomorrow in a showdown to be played across the city at Heworth's Elmpark Way (7.30pm) - Acorn's fourth straight final appearance since this competition started - while holders New Earswick All Blacks await on Wednesday.

Paul-Rientoul said: "I didn't get chance to have a last game with the 'A' team after taking over from Scott so this is a good chance to have a final game or two with them.

"We've been in the final every year. We got beat by Sharlston last year so are looking to make up for that.

"Beverley are coached by Scott Taylor, the Hull FC prop, and are well-drilled. We beat them quite easily in April (40-16 in the YML premier division) but they had seven players out so I'm expecting a different team and a tough game."

Acorn's first team have no match on Saturday as much of the National Conference League takes a break due to the bank holiday weekend and the Championship's Summer Bash in Blackpool.

Paul-Rientoul therefore says "one or two" first-teamers might be involved in the cup finals - but only due to injuries in the camp, insisting the 'A' team players who got them there would not otherwise be omitted.

"Some players could be playing three games in a week so we might have to mix it up a little bit," he added.

"Hopefully we can get the two pieces of silverware - it'd be a great way for me to finish off with the 'A' team."

Meanwhile, on Acorn's upturn in the NCL premier division - back-to-back wins since he took charge, following six straight defeats - Paul-Rientoul said: "It was always there - a win was coming.

"We were only just getting beat - we only lost by two points at Wath Brow when people expected 60 points to be put on us. The lads took confidence from that. Kells came over from Cumbria - it's hard being on a bus for four hours - and we got that win.

"The systems were set in place, though. I just picked a team and maybe made a few little tweaks but everything was set up."

On their chances of escaping the drop zone, he added: "We've come off the bottom now. We just need a couple more wins. We've still got a long way to go but we can build on this.

"We've got Egremont next week and they're struggling a bit as well so hopefully we can pick up another two points there and kick on again."

Elsewhere, York Lokomotive are in action in YML division two on Saturday, away to Leeds Akkies (2.30pm).
