YORK has had five players from various sections of the amateur game selected for international rugby league honours - plus a new call-up for league representative team.

York Acorn ace Harry Bromwich leads the way, having been selected for the BARLA Great Britain Under-23s tour to Jamaica, joining Jonty Thompson and Matt Lister, the physios at Thanet Road, on the plane.

The 20-year-old was duly making his GB bow today having been named at loose-forward for the opening game.

Said Acorn head coach Leigh Paul-Rientoul: "At his age he's a brilliant player. He's been playing in our first team at the top level of amateur rugby league (the National Conference League premier division) and is progressing fairly well. He deserves it."

York Ladies, now York City Knights Ladies, also had two players, dynamic duo Mary Tiplady and Katie Langham, selected for the England Lionesses taking part in the Associations Cup.

The Lionesses, the reigning cup holders, beat the GB Armed Forces 62-0 at Stanningley on Sunday, and will take on GB Teachers in a month's time and England Universities in July.

Meanwhile, in veterans rugby, Heworth's former York City Knights prop, Dan Briggs, and York Lokomotive chairman Simon Moat have been picked for the Great Britain Masters team to play the touring Australia Masters at Heworth's Elmpark Way on August 14.

Masters rugby sees different age groups wear different coloured shorts, with tackling rules altering depending on the age of the ball carrier.

Elsewhere, Acorn 'A' team ace Luke Swales has had to withdraw from the Yorkshire Men's League rep squad that will tour Serbia next month.

However, team-mate Dan Lazenby has been called up in his stead, with Acorn also having prop James Bromwich and veteran forward Mike Embleton going on the trip, along with coach Paul-Rientoul.

The quartet fly out on June 23.

Paul-Rientoul said: "It's a shame for Luke but it's a deserved call-up for Dan.

"He lives past Tadcaster and travels over, and he plays wherever I want him to play. He's a really committed player. The Yorkshire Men's League team isn't just about the best players but also the most committed and Dan is someone we feel deserves a chance to go over there."
