HEWORTH suffered a 22-12 Yorkshire Men's League division one defeat at the hands of Queensbury in a close-fought contest at Elmpark Way.

The Villagers were ahead 8-6 at the break, but defensive errors and a second-half hat-trick by strong-running Queensbury centre Arran Moore ultimately proved to be the difference between the two teams.

Both sides started strongly, showing plenty of attacking intent, but defences dominated with Heworth exerting pressure on their opponents' line on a number of occasions but they failed to turn it into points.

The deadlock was finally broken after 19 minutes when winger Sam Johnson fielded an attacking kick from the visitors and his offload sent loose forward Joe Deighton racing 60 metres to touch down and add the conversion.

It was again end-to-end action until four minutes from the interval with Queensbury levelling matters with a try by substitute Ste Nagy, goaled by scrum-half Jordan Brown.

The Villagers edged 8-6 ahead, though, in the final minute with a Deighton penalty goal for a high tackle.

The opening four minutes of the second half proved disastrous with the Villagers knocking on straight from the kick off and, from the resulting scrum, Moore crossed for his first try which Brown improved.

Three minutes later, some slack defending led to Moore's second touchdown and the Bradford outfit led 16-8.

Heworth, however, battled their way back and, on 56 minutes, a superb cut-out pass from player-coach George Elliott sent centre Danny Simpson racing over for an unconverted score.

Moore went on to complete his hat-trick on the hour mark and Brown's third conversion made it 22-12.

The Black and Whites worked extremely hard in the closing quarter, but were unable to add to their tally and the visitors went home with the spoils.

Elliott was Heworth's man of the match, strongly supported by hooker Dave Hayes and props Charlie Magill and Karl Durkin.

In the premier division, York Acorn A missed out on an opportunity to go top following a 21-14 defeat at mid-table Mirfield Stags.

Acorn, who have played two more games than leaders Sharlston Rovers, remain second as Doncaster Toll Bar also went down 26-18 on their travels against Siddal Academy.

In division two, York Lokomotive picked up their first points of the season, following a 50-6 triumph over Keighley Albion to climb over their visitors having lost their opening two fixtures of the season.

Lokos now sit fourth in the early standings.

Four players from the Lokos' Masters section. meanwhile, have been selected to represent Yorkshire in a forthcoming county tournament in Wales.

The quartet - Simon Moat, Stephen Whattam, John Rushworth and Adam Ferry - will line up for the White Rose against teams from Lancashire, London, the South East and South Wales Combined.

The tournament will be on June 26 at South Wales Scorpions' Virginia Park ground in Caerphilly.

The call-ups follow on from the Lokos Masters' winning the prestigious Team of the Tournament award at the recent Cumbria festival.

The Lokos have a full diary of fixtures planned for the remainder of the year, the highlight being an invitation to participate in a national tournament due to be held in Blackpool in September.
