YORK Lokomotive ARLC Masters took the Team of the Festival trophy at the prestigious Cumbria Festival held in Barrow.

With nine of the top masters amateur rugby league sides in the country competing, the Lokos veterans, now in their second season, had to be on top form, with tough games against buoyant Lancashire team Leyland Warriors and West Cumbria Masters, whose squad contained no fewer than eight former professional players.

The drew both encounters 0-0 but their performances were recognised with the festival's top honour and the club's first piece of masters silverware.

The Lokos kicked off the festival against Leyland and were under pressure from the start, until the introduction of strong running centre Adam Ferry.

Alongside the probing runs of stand-off Geoff Loftus and hooker Simon Baynes he helped the Lokos take a grip on the match.

Despite Lokos pressure, however, the 30-minute game ended scoreless.

After brief respite, the Lokos started sluggishly against West Cumbria but again lifted themselves and got on top, with Stephen Whattam, Adam Simeon and John Rushworth constant threats and flying winger Adrien Beales covering every blade of grass.

Meanwhile, York Acorn 'A' enjoyed a 40-16 win at Beverley in the Yorkshire Men's League to kick-start their premier division campaign.

Mike Embleton and Adam Sellers notched doubles, with Josh Thompson, Kev Brayshaw and Tim Elliott also crossing. Mark Sanderson added six goals.

Coach Leigh Paul-Rientoul said: "It was a really small pitch and conditions weren't great. It was tit for tat at the start but we got into our stride."

Beverley are the team Paul-Rientoul's men will face in the Forty-20 Cup final next month.

Fourth-placed Selby Warriors were handed a 30-0 walkover win against Eastmoor Dragons in what would have been their last match of the winter Pennine League division two campaign.
