YORK Acorn 'A' won their second derby in as many weeks to continue their quest to reach a fourth straight Forty-20 Cup final.

After beating Heworth in their first group game of this Yorkshire Men's League competition, Acorn, of the premier division, saw of division two neighbours York Lokomotive 50-12 on the Lokos' Knavesmire pitch.

The Blue and Golds' coach, Leigh Paul-Rientoul, said: "It was an easy win on the scoreboard but we still have a lot to work on. That Knavesmire pitch is very narrow and we didn't use the full width.

"Lokos are a team that have come together as one and stuck together. I knew we'd be able to do a job on them but I also knew their heads wouldn't go down - that was the case and they got a couple of deserved tries."

Veteran forward Mike Embleton was man of the match for an Acorn side who fielded a fair amount of first-team experience.

Rientoul added: "Our forwards, such as Mike and Adam Endersby, got us on the front foot and from that, like last week, our fitness and speed of play took us forwards."

Acorn's try-scorers were Endersby, Luke Swales, Tim Elliott (2), Johnny Waldron, Jordan Myers, Adam Speck, Nick Speck and Kev Brayshaw, with Matt Chilton adding seven goals.

Lokos' try-scorers were Matt Chapman and Liam Watling, with Tom Dunmore converting both.

Watling and Dunmore were their men of the match.

Heworth, meanwhile, paid the price for a poor second half as they were edged out 20-18 by Skirlaugh Bulls 'A' at Elmpark Way.

The Villagers led 14-6 at the break and looked on course for their first win of the new season but defensive errors and some poor decision-making allowed the Humbersiders back into the match, and they won the game with a towering touchline conversion seven minutes from time.

Heworth opened their account after five minutes with full-back Fraser West bursting clear from a good off-load by veteran prop Wayne Foster to cross for an excellent try, loose-forward Joe Deighton converting.

The visitors levelled 11 minutes later with a touchdown by full-back Alex Foster goaled by scrum-half Lewis Straw.

On 31 minutes, the hosts were back in front when Deighton forced his way over from close range, and that lead was increased on the stroke of half-time.

Centre Lewis Worthington broke away from near his own line before being hauled down around half-way and, from the resulting play-the-ball, winger Ben Stoker raced clear for a fine try.

However, three minutes after the interval, Heworth switched off in defence allowing Bulls loose-forward Matthew Sheard to crash over near the posts, Straw's extras reducing the deficit to 14-12.

A Straw penalty then levelled matters on 62 minutes before Villagers centre Chris Varley dived over from acting-half to put them back ahead.

The visitors were not to be denied, though, and, seven minutes from time, substitute Jed Carter crossed in the corner and Straw's excellent conversion earned them the spoils.

Scrum-half David Hayes took the man-of-the-match award for Heworth with West and Deighton also prominent.
