NEW EARSWICK All Blacks crashed to their first defeat without scoring a point in two years after being beaten 32-0 at West Leeds Eagles in Pennine League Championship.

A strange afternoon of driving hail and snow, a ten minute intermission in the first half because of the weather, and a quickly deteriorating pitch would be the All Blacks downfall.

All Blacks were 18-0 behind at half-time as they succumbed to handling errors and knock-ons throughout the game and they did not improve in the second period.

All Blacks head coach Jack Stearman said: “Take nothing away from West Leeds. They had a game plan and were used to their pitch.

"We like to play a quick expansive game and it was not possible to do that. We should have wised up to the conditions sooner than we did. We will be looking forward to them coming to White Rose Avenue to return the great hospitality.”

Selby Warriors were given an unexpected reprieve when their Pennine League division two game at Ovenden was abandoned with the visitors 14-0 adrift.

A snow storm left the players unable to see across the pitch and gave the referee little choice.

Sherburn Bears responded in style after being dumped out of the Pennine Cup with a 26-12 win over East Leeds in division four east - a victory that vaulted them into second place.

In difficult conditions, Sherburn were soon 6-0 behind following a breakaway try in the opening two minutes.

They responded on 12 minutes when second row John Fenwick burst through a series of tacklers to romp in from 35 metres.

It was a score that saw the Bears take control and stopped East Leeds from gaining any momentum.

A carbon copy move for Fenwick saw him rocket past four or five tacklers before rolling the full-back and crossing to put Sherburn 12-6 ahead after half an hour.

The home side pressed for further scores and soon added to their total. Rob Culshaw was instrumental, the versatile back slotting into scrum-half and showing deft footwork as he followed up his own grubber kick to toe poke the ball around the full-back and dive on the ball to score ten metres in from touch.

It was a try that gave the Bears a 16-6 lead at the break and they soon head a man advantage as an East Leeds player left the field as the weather deteriorated. Sherburn took advantage as centre Jordan Richards cantered after a deep kick and hacked the ball forward to score.

But that try sparked East Leeds back into life and they reduced the gap to 22-12 after the Bears spilled the ball on the first carry of the set after receiving the kick-off.

They were also capitalising on handling errors in treacherous conditions and only brilliant work at the back from returning full-back Ben Pugh, as well as wingers Dom Romans and Dan Bottomley, stopped further incursions.

Sherburn gradually turned the tide and Richards struck for his second score after bursting through the line following a brilliant off-load from hard working loose-forward Ronnie Roebuck.
