YORK ACORN ARLC booked their spot in the second round of the Challenge Cup with a 36-10 victory over Sharlston Rovers at Thanet Road.

Acorn came out of the blocks at a blistering pace - forcing a drop from the very first set - and this was followed by Sharlston giving away a penalty that produced another set of six for the home side.

It resulted in the first score, only three minutes in, as Ryan Gallacher crossed. Anthony Chilton was unable to bag the conversion. Acorn scored again three minutes later with Josh Thompson crossing for the home side.

With barely ten minutes on the clock, Acorn further extended their advantage. Jack Byrnes and Tom Hill combined well setting up a kick from Chilton. Gallacher was the quickest to the ball to score again for Acorn and Chilton put through his first conversion.

Sharlston put together a couple of attacking moves but, after 19 minutes, Acorn responded with Hill finding the gap to score.

They pressed the advantage and, on the half hour mark, Thompson crossed for his second try.

Sharlston began to lift their game and were rewarded with a score on 34 minutes as Dan Hawksworth forced his way through the defence. Tom Wandless added the extras but Acorn were still 22-6 ahead at the half.

York started the second half the brightest and crossed on 44 minutes with a well-worked try, which was grounded by hooker Nick Speck. Chilton added his second conversion.

Hill got his second, and Acorn's sixth try, after 50 minutes as they continued to dominate.

Sharlston had the better of the next 20 minutes but were only able to add one score - with ten minutes left on the clock - as centre Ash Smith crossed the whitewash.

The game was put to bed on 77 minutes with Byrnes on hand to touch down a Chilton cross-field kick.
