JAKE CALAM won't make York Acorn ARLC's crucial trip to Salford City Roosters but head coach Scott Rhodes is hoping he can call on Jordan Potter as his side bid to book a National Conference League division one play-off berth.

The full-back is missing from the Blue & Golds line up with an ankle injury but Rhodes will give centre Potter a fitness test as he bids to bulk up his squad.

Acorn are in fifth in the table and need a victory at third bottom Salford to guarantee a post-season berth.

The Thanet Road side could be overtaken by Hunslet Warriors should they lose and the latter win at Normanton Knights but Rhodes is looking no further ahead than the trip to Lancashire.

"It depends on other results but it is a must win game for us," he said. "Fourth spot would get us a home game in the playoffs and our home form has been a lot better than our away form.

"I said it last week, it is one game at a time for us. Salford are getting some decent results at home and they seem to get a better team out than when they are away. We will go there full of confidence. We got a win last weekend (against Saddleworth) and were very clinical in our 54-20 victory.

"We have beaten them already at home this year and we are looking forward to it.

"It's no change from the start of the season. I thought at the start of the year we would be in the mix but we have set no goals."

On his squad, which could see Daryl North look to add to his tally after a try against Saddleworth last week, he added: "We'll give Jordan Potter a fitness test. He has been struggling with a knee injury for a few weeks but he seems to be getting better.

"Jake Calam is out with an ankle problem but everyone else if fit and available. We have a lot to choose from. Last week's result was very good and I can't see there being much change from that."

New Earswick All Blacks head coach Jack Stearman wants his side to kick start their season when they entertain Odsal Serdbergh in the Pennine League Championship.

The Villagers were beaten 40-12 by Queensbury in the first round of the President's Cup last time out, Sam Cooper and Jack Carling getting the tries in an otherwise long afternoon for Stearman's men.

The White Rose Avenue chief says his squad treated the cup clashes as "extra friendlies" but, after losing their opening match of the season against Stainland Stags, he said it was time to turn their home ground into a fortress.

"It's our first home game of the season and we are looking to get into the winning habit," he said. "After three defeats we are looking to get a good performance. We used the cup games as extra friendlies but we were disappointed with the away result in our first game of the season and we need to right the wrongs of that and make New Earswick a fortress again.

"Last year we only lost one game (at home) all season and our target is to win the league and the York Cup. The only way to do that is with good home results."

Selby Warriors go to West Craven Warriors in Pennine League division two looking to bounce back after losing late on against a strong Ovenden side in their first game.

Trailing 26-6 at the half and with just Jack Greensmith's try in the bank, the Warriors showed tremendous grit to level at 26-26 with ten minutes left following tries from Michael Wassell, Shane Simpson and Greensmith.

A Gavyn Lighthowler drop goal, from 30 yards, even put them in front but Ovenden scored a couple of late tries against a tiring defence.
