HEWORTH ARLC made it two wins out of two in division two of the Yorkshire Men’s League with a hard-earned 32-18 win at Hunslet Warriors ‘A’.

After an evenly contested first half, the Villagers trailed 18-16, but a strong defensive display kept the home side scoreless in the second period and a further three tries gave them the spoils.

The Warriors were first on the scoreboard after six minutes with a touchdown by loose forward Omar Medhi, converted by scrum-half Jamie Thurlwell.

However, Heworth levelled 14 minutes later when returning centre Gareth Watson put winger Lewis Hartley over for a try, goaled by loose forward Joe Deighton.

Hunslet went back in front straight from the restart when the Villagers failed to deal with a high swirling kick and full-back Jake Carney swooped to score, with Thurlwell again adding the extras.

On 27 minutes parity was restored when an excellent handling movement saw substitute Ross Varley sending Deighton in for try, which he goaled himself.

However, the home side responded immediately. Heworth knocked on in the first tackle following the kick off and, from the resulting scrum, stand-off Mackenzie Tennant jinked over for another Thurlwell goaled effort to make it 18-12 to the hosts.

Five minutes before the break, Hartley dived over the line for his second score direct from acting half-back to reduce the deficit to two points.

The Black and Whites hit the front five minutes into the second half when a good offload by prop Jonny Clark put scrum-half Josh Poulter in for an unconverted score.

The home side hit back strongly and dominated possession for the following 20 minutes, but some resolute defending kept them at bay until the 64th minute.

Deighton’s pass then saw Poulter go over for his second touchdown and winger Christian Pollock’s conversion made it 26-18 to the visitors.

The icing on the cake came six minutes from time with Ross Varley dummying his way over for the final try, which Deighton goaled to maintain the Villagers’ excellent start to the season.

Poulter was named man of the match for Heworth for his non-stop effort, with full-back Fraser West and Clark also taking the eye.

Selby Warriors were edged out 18-16 by Brotherton Bulldogs in the final of the Selby & District ARL Andrew Wells Cup at Featherstone Rovers’ ground.
