HEWORTH ARLFC’s opening game of the division three campaign under new coach Neil Horton ended dismally with a 48-10 loss to Dewsbury Moor at Elmpark Way.

The Villagers trailed 24-0 at the break with their young and inexperienced side showing plenty of spirit and determination, but not enough alone to prevent the visitors posting nine tries while only being able to respond with two of their own.

Dewsbury blitzed three tries in the opening 15 minutes through second rower James Eatherley, winger Tom Kaye and stand off Pete Robinson. Two were converted by Brad Foster.

Heworth came back strongly and created good field position.

But Dewsbury added two Andrew Robinson tries in the closing five minutes of the first half before centre Bartley O’Brien crossed and Foster goaled early in the second half.

Heworth got on the scoreboard on 54 minutes after good handling saw winger Lewis Worthington cross in the corner.

Kaye countered with a try, kicked by Foster, before the Villagers hit back with stand-off Ross Varley following up a good kick by scrum-half Billy Sturdy to go under the posts. Loose forward Joe Deighton converted.

Dewsbury added two more converted tries late on.

Skipper and second rower Chris Varley was Heworth’s man of the match with strong support from full back Christian Pollock.
