FORWARD power underpinned a second successive win for York Acorn RLFC in the National Conference first division.

Acorn toppled Milford 28-14, coming back from the concession of an early try for Milford centre Matt Broksom, with James Coates adding the extras.

Acorn’s Antony Chilton’s field kick stood up in the in goal area for Tom Hill to off-load to Joel Johnson to fight his way over. Chilton goaled the conversion.

Another Acorn advance led to Chilton finding man of the match Tim Stubbs, then to Danny Caldwell and back to Chilton to cross and add the extras.

A huge hit from Andy Gargan forced a knock-on from which Budd exploited a gap to score under the posts. The reliable Chilton was again accurate.

However, the lead was trimmed to 18-8 by a Milford penalty.

Stubbs inspired a surge by Jordan Myers to cross on the hosts’ first set after half-time. Chilton completed the punishment with another successful kick.

As the rivals vied for dominance deadlock ensued for 20 minutes before Acorn notched a try by Ryan Gallagher who muscled in. Chilton goaled.

Acorn’s forwards fended off all inroads before a lapse enabled winger Nathan Hargreaves to pounce followed by a Coates’ conversion.

In a late surge, Acorn twice went close to extending their lead but were still able to celebrate a superb win in which Stubbs and Budd excelled.
