YORK Lokomotive ARLC suffered immense agony as a try with the last play of the match - the last play of the season - denied them their first-ever piece of silverware.

The Lokos entered the replayed final match of the campaign last night knowing victory over visiting Normanton Knights 'A' would see them win Yorkshire Men's League group two.

The game had been abandoned at half-time last week due to floodlight failure with the Lokos leading 18-6.

Here they led 16-10 thanks to Ben Thompson's super try five minutes from time - only for Normanton to hit back for a 16-16 draw.

Lokos boss Simon Moat said: "It was devastating. We'd worked really hard all year and for it to go down to the last minute of the season - it was cruel.

"We'd been in control of the first game but Normanton brought a different team this time, with six first-teamers added. They still couldn't beat us.

"We still finished second and our objective was to finish in the top two. We had one hand on the trophy but it wasn't to be. The feeling now is we want to get working on next season."

Captain Liam Watling gave Lokos the lead, Tom Dunmore converting.

Normanton responded with two tries and a penalty after half-time for a 10-6 lead.

Tom Gargan scampered over, Dunmore goaling to make it 12-10, and, with five minutes left, the Lokos turned over a Normanton scrum, with Watling gathering to feed winger Thompson, who scooted to the corner.

However, then came heartbreak for the hosts.
