HEWORTH ARLC failed to reproduce their winning form as they went down 22-6 at home to Coventry Bears in National Conference League division three.

The Villagers were looking to back-up their second win of the season against Woolston Rovers from the previous weekend, but they were denied by Championship One-bound Bears.

The hosts trailed 10-0 at the break and the Midlands outfit's ability to control the ball in the greasy Elmpark Way conditions led to their success.

Despite dominating possession in the opening quarter, Heworth were unable to press home their advantage due to a succession of mistakes and basic handling errors.

On 15 minutes, the Bears took the lead after another dropped pass was pounced on by speedy full-back Tiwanda Chipadza, who sliced through the home defence to touch down and loose forward Steve Coleman added the conversion.

Six minutes later, Coventry man of the match centre Rich Synott took advantage of an overlap to cross in the left corner for an unconverted try.

Heworth fought back hard and exerted strong pressure on the visitors' line for the remainder of the half, but were unable to turn that into points.

It was a similar story in the second period, with the Villagers continuing to squander possession, and they went further behind on 53 minutes after failing to deal with a high kick. Synott snapped up the loose ball and went over under the posts for his second touchdown, which was goaled by Coleman for a 16-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Coventry ensured there was no way back for Heworth when prop Alex Beddows forced his way over and Coleman kicked his final conversion.

Six minutes from time, the hosts finally got on the scoreboard after a cross kick from stand-off Danny Allan was gathered by winger Lewis Worthington, whose offload put second rower Steve Scott over for a try. Allan goaled.

Heworth's best performers were hooker Josh Poulter, centre Adam Withington and young substitute forward Connor Page.
