NEW Earswick All Blacks ARLC ended 2013 on a high with a 36-18 victory at home to Dewsbury Moor in the Pennine League Championship.

The triumph, New Earswick’s third in eight games, hoisted the White Rose Avenue side up to fifth in the table heading into the second half of the campaign.

Dewsbury took the lead after six minutes with a converted try, but the All Blacks levelled three minutes later when full-back Jack Hodgson crossed after receiving an off-load from scrum-half Liam Gargan. Stand-off Tom Holmes converted.

The home side hit the front when winger Will Leatt collected Gargan’s kick to the corner to score.

A converted try saw the game swing back in Dewsbury’s favour, but the All Blacks regained the initiative when substitute prop Jack Stearman powered over. Holmes added the extras for a 16-12 lead at half-time.

After the break Dewsbury moved 18-16 ahead with a converted try, but the lead did not last long as winger Dean Smith collected a high bomb to score a try which Holmes converted.

A Holmes penalty extended the All Blacks’ advantage and Holmes then converted a second try by player-coach Stearman.

New Earswick sealed their victory when Gargan kicked through and followed up to hack forward again before crashing over. Holmes added the extras.

The man of the match award went to hooker Jack Carling, backed up well by Stearman and Gargan.

Selby Warriors are bottom of division one after handing hosts Brotherton Bulldogs a 30-0 walkover victory.

The Warriors’ second string also gave a walkover to their weekend opponents, Allerton Bywater, in division seven.

Third-placed Sherburn Bears closed the gap at the top of division five with a last-gasp 18-16 victory at home to second-placed Crofton Cougars. The Bears let slip a 12-0 half-time lead to trail 16-12 with seconds remaining, before scoring the match-winning try under the sticks to snatch the points.

The try scorers for the Bears were winger Rob Hollins, with a brace, and full-back Ben Pugh.

The man of the match award went to captain and centre Ray Boyes, while there were also strong performances from Pugh, Hollins and stand-off Sam Booth, who topped the tackle count and created the winning try.
