A flying start for Heworth ARLC's new chief

HEWORTH ARLC celebrated their first league win since October 2010 as they trounced Featherstone Lions 58-6 in National Conference League division three.

The Villagers started the campaign under new coach Tim Rumford in impressive style, with returning full-back Leigh Rientoul scoring four of their 11 tries.

The visitors led 26-0 after 20 minutes and, although the remainder of the first half was a scrappy affair, they scored at regular intervals in the second period.

Winger Mike Welsh got Heworth off to the perfect start with a try in the first minute, and scrum-half Tom Barron converted.

Man of the match Adam Jones sent winger Ben Stoker over on 11 minutes before Rientoul touched down on 15 and 17 minutes, with two Barron goals making it 22-0.

Centre Tom Wilcox-Harrison crossed on 20 minutes before Davi Garahan scored for the Lions and Rich Frankland converted.

Substitute Dan Walton got the opening try of the second half for Heworth on 43 minutes and Wilcox-Harrison went in again only four minutes later, with Barron adding the extras.

Rientoul grabbed his hat-trick score on 54 minutes and added a fourth three minutes later, with Barron converting both.

Loose forward Jones broke from halfway to score on the hour and substitute Gavin Grant got in on the act on 64 minutes, with Barron adding the goal.

While Jones was the Villagers’ stand-out player, there were also eye-catching performances from hooker Rich Rogers and skipper Chris Varley.
