Rugby League: York Ladies get off to winning start

York Ladies kicked off their Women’s Amateur Rugby League Association winter league with a 10-4 victory over Castleford Panthers.

Prior to the game – and for all matches in the WARLA League – there was a minute’s silence for Phil “OJ” Johnson, the York Ladies manager and coach and New Earswick All Blacks ARLC chairman, who passed away in August.

York started well with forwards Lauren Powell, Claire Viney and Kay Rollinson laying the platform for scoring opportunities, and they took the lead as centre Sam Boyes powered over, adding the goal too.

Castleford responded with an unconverted try but York extended their lead before the break through second-row Carly Hilton after quick hands created space in the corner.

There were no points added in the second half, before the game finished early due to an injury to a Castleford player.

York’s player of the match was Teri Chu, while debutants Rachael Harrower, Laura Pallister and Ashleigh Hyde played well.
