Northern Cup joy for Wigginton Squash Club wonder Joe Twigge

WIGGINGTON Squash Club junior Joe Twigge has added to his recent success by captaining Yorkshire’s Under-13 side to a thrilling Northern Cup victory.

The Huntington School pupil has previously held the inter-counties title with Yorkshire and has continued his promising rise in the game by taking up the captaincy for the tournament at the Prestbury Squash Club in Cheshire.

The relatively inexperienced Yorkshire side got off to a fantastic start as they comfortably beat Cumbria 4-1, followed by a dominating 5-0 victory over Derbyshire, with Twigge standing out, winning both his matches without dropping a single game.

Perhaps the most important victory saw Yorkshire defeat the favourites Northumbria 3-2 in a close encounter before a well deserved 4-1 win against Cheshire.

These results meant Yorkshire and Northumbria would enter the final round level on points.

A tremendous victory from Twigge against his Durham and Cleveland opponent started Yorkshire off on a firm footing as the rest of the team would replicate his match and the team did not drop a game in an emphatic 5-0 whitewash to secure the Northern Cup, regardless of Northumbria’s result due to their earlier victory over their rivals.

The Yorkshire victors consisted of captain Twigge, Sam Todd, Oliver Brown, Max Pugh, and Tom and Ben Sockett.

Twigge has represented Yorkshire since the age of nine and continues to impress for the county and the Wigginton youngster will be hoping to maintain that success and nurture his promising talent in the game.
