Ollie Hicks beats defending champion in York and District Tennis Championships

OLLIE HICKS won a tie-break to beat defending champion Dominic Shread to win his first title at the annual York and District Tennis Championships.

Hicks took the under-18s crown at St Peter’s School by a 10-2 margin in the tie-break after winning the first set 6-1 and losing the second 7-6.

In the U16 final, Ben King defeated Matthew Stephenson 6-1 6-3, while the U14 crown went to Oscar Hubble after his 6-1 6-3 victory over Joshua Hunt.

Robbie Greenall toppled Barney Baker 7-5 in the U12 category, while the U10 title was won by George Bristow, who ousted Scott Cooper 6-0 6-2.

It needed a tie-break to settle the U16 girls’ final, with Olivia Shread getting the better of Lauren Caley 10-8 after losing the first set 6-3 and winning the second 6-0.

Lucy Tomlinson won the U14 championship, defeating E Caley 6-3, while the U12 section was won by Sophie Adams after a 6-2 7-5 win over Alex Morton.

The tournament referee was Bob Shread, the head of tennis at St Peter’s School.
