YORK City Baths Club ace Genna Suddes claimed fifth place at the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships at the London Aquatics Centre.

Genna was joined by her sisters Ellen and Carrie, all representing Huntington School, and York City Baths Club were also represented by Archbishop Holgate’s pupil Sam Russell and Alistair Mitchell, who now attends a sixth form college outside York.

The athletes had their scores combined for a non-consecutive swim and run of 100 metres or 200 metres and 1,600 metres respectively at the London Olympics venue.

Year 8 student Genna had her best ever finish in coming fifth and her trophy was awarded by Mhairi Spence, GB Olympian and women’s modern pentathlon world champion.

The performance helped to consolidate Genna’s place on the Pentathlon GB England Talent Programme.

Carrie, a Year 10 pupil, is returning from a long injury lay-off and finished 45th, an improvement of more than 20 places on her qualifying position.

Ellen, accompanied by Jess Isaacs from Fulford School, both Year 11, pulled out solid swim and run times and finished in the top 30 for the fourth consecutive year. She was 18th and Isaacs was 19th.

The boys’ honours were taken by Mitchell, who finished sixth in the Year 12 section, his best-ever finish, posting speedy swim and run times.

He also has a place on the Pentathlon GB England Talent Programme.

Year 9 pupil Sam Russell produced a blistering 100m freestyle swim in a time of one minute 1.11 seconds to finish 13th.
