AN outstanding season for City of York Hockey Club’s under-14 girls ‘A’ team has just got better.

Already double Yorkshire champions, the team have now won pool ‘A’ of the U14 Girls North of England finals to qualify for the EHB national finals at Wakefield on May 11. This effectively means they can count themselves one of the best eight teams in England at this age group.

York’s first match in the North finals saw captain Lauren Ellwood score four goals in a 6-1 win over Bowdon. Immy Emmott added two more after fine work by Maddie Hunter, Lucy Lawrence, Harriet Stephenson and Lucy Hadaway.

York then beat Leeds Adel 4-0.

Lawrence’s superb shot from a corner put them ahead, and good passing from Hannah Smith and Katherine Robinson kept them in control, with Hunter, Stephenson and Lawrence solid in midfield.

Rebecca Green then fired home from the top of the ‘D’.

York’s defence worked hard with Alex Craig and Lucy Lovisetto on fine form, while Robinson and Green also made vital stops. Goalkeeper Ella Deighton also pulled off some exceptional saves. Goals from Ellwood and Emmott sealed the victory.

Then followed a 2-0 win over Deeside Ramblers. York were denied in the first half but picked up the pace after the break and a superb reverse-stick shot from Ellwood put them ahead. Excellent passing from Katarina Bonner, Smith, Robinson, Lovisetto and Emmott set up Ellwood to make it 2-0.Meanwhile, North Yorkshire enjoyed success in the first U14 Girls County Championships in Leeds - winning all four of their games in the ‘A’ pool. They beat South Yorkshire 7-1, with Lucy Williams netting four times and Charlotte Roberts, Amelia Procter and Georgia Rothwell one apiece.

They then defeated Humberside 4-1, going three up through Roberts, Procter and Williams. Humberside pulled one back but North Yorkshire’s midfield of Anna Mills and Matilda Jagger battled well before Procter’s second goal.

Durham were seen off 4-0 through goals by Roberts, Proctor and Williams (2).

West Yorkshire provided the toughest test but, with keeper Lucy Butters and defenders Ella Durkin and Pippa Burdass in form, Norths won 2-1 thanks to a Procter brace.

In the ‘B’ pool, North Yorkshire beat Durham 3-0 through Imogen Bulinski, Milly Goode and Emily Crisp.

Then followed a 2-2 draw with Humberside, with Goode and Crisp netting.

They lost 3-0 in their last game against West Yorkshire.
