Heroic defeat for battling Heworth U12s

Heworth ARLC Under-12s gave an heroic performance when, with a team of only 12, they ran their blood to water in an 18-14 defeat to a good Dewsbury Celtic side.

Celtic at times were on the back foot and the young Villagers were unlucky not to pull off mission impossible.

Dewsbury led 14-0 but Heworth rolled their sleeves up and, after sustained pressure, produced a passage of play which brought the try of the match, Harry Sheppeard crossing out wide.

The Villagers nearly scored again when keeping the ball alive brilliantly on half-time.

Heworth threw the ball about superbly after the break and missed chances before Sam Young crashed over, Leon Beattie goaling.

A knock-on and an overlap helped Dewsbury to extend their lead, but Max Carry replied after a storming run, although a frantic last five minutes did not bring a killer try.

Ziggy Dudman equalised late on as York Acorn U11s drew 18-18 with Keighley Albion.

There was a great team effort in defence by Acorn for whom top performer Josh Parker set up two tries, including one of Ben Atkin’s hat-trick.

Top tackler Ellie Hendry and man-of-the-match Lawrence Lumb led from the front with strong tackling and running.
