YORK Acorn ARLC Under-10s are celebrating an amazing turnaround in form.

The team was started by coach Craig Lucas two years ago and in their first season the youngsters won only one of their 22 games.

But the Blue and Golds aces kicked on to record 20 victories from 23 games this season.

Lucas said: “I started the side two years ago with help from my friend Gavin Witty and we now have a cracking set of lads.

“When we started we had only four players, but after going to school, shops and anywhere else that would put up a poster promoting the team, we soon had nine which meant we could be put in a league.

“We played 22 games last season and only won one but all the team loved the game and were still hungry for more.

“Pre-season started last November and by that time we were now up to 16 players, which was excellent.

“Every one of the lads has come on so much, from attitude to fitness, and it’s all down to rugby league.

“This season, we played 23 games and won 20, which is outstanding progress in two years, and we were playing some teams that whooped us last year.

“Gav and I are so proud of these young men.”

Meanwhile, a lack of cohesion and missed tackles cost Heworth U9s as they lost to Siddal by one try in the last game of their season.

Oliver Pratt was the star of the show for the young Villagers once again, scoring six tries to gain the opposition’s man of the match, top tackler and magic moment accolades.

The magic moment came after some expansive play by the home side, which enabled Pratt to offload to coaches’ man of the match Lucas Burden to dive over for a try.

Pratt, Burden and Ben Young made some excellent tackles all over the pitch, Feargus Brown made some good tackles out wide, and Oliver Lambert and Harvey Watson put in some great runs.

Watson took the most improved award and Kian Ogilvie worked hard in attack and defence to earn the parents’ man of the match.

Siddal, with some great rugby, hard running and superb tackling, got on top and won despite the hosts scoring two late tries.

Heworth U7s played their last games of the season - a double header of mini games at Hunslet Warriors.

They again played with great fight and determination in very windy conditions.

The Villagers played some adventurous rugby and put in a great defensive performance.

The star players were Ellis Sothrington, for his great try- scoring runs, and also Ben Taylor, for his all round game.

Kai Gately and Jay Downes also recieved certificates.

A team spokesman said: “Well played everyone during a great first season.”
