THIS year's new York College rugby league development team got off to a losing start - but coach Jack Stearman took plenty of positives.

York lost 50-20 to title favourites Pontefract College in Yorkshire division one, with tries coming from Alex Wilkins, Dan Richardson, Henry Levett and Will Farley, Will Ireland and James Casey adding goals.

Said Stearman: "We let ourselves down in the middle half of the game but there were a lot of positives.

"The college is a development centre and, while it's nice to win, it's not all about winning games for these lads."

Meanwhile, Heworth U10s lost to Dewsbury Moor at Elm Park Way but some great performances came from most improved player James Leach, parents' man of the match Jay Richards, top tackler Tyler Monks and opposition and coaches' man of the match Jay Ogilvie.

Heworth's one try was a fantastic solo effort from Ogilvie.

Oliver Pratt was in sensational form, scoring six tries, as Heworth U9s continued their impressive run by beating Fryston Warriors.

He was not alone as the Villagers put in superb team performance.

Top tackler and most improved player Lucas Burden scored twice, while the impressive Sam Hunt gained the magic moment award after setting up a try with a set move. Ben Young was the coaches' man of the match as he defended well and ran good lines, while Kian Ogilvie, Keane and Reagan Brough, Liam Foster and Feargus Brown, the latter tackling excellently, also shone.

A poor first half cost Heworth U8s as they were edged by Moldgreen in a thriller.

Ellis Cochrane opened the scoring but Heworth trailed by three tries at the break.

Heworth then showed more of their recent form, man of the match Dan Clarke inspiring the comeback by setting up three tries for Adam Hodgson before Callum Costanzo and Harvey Barker, who likewise starred, also crossed.

Good defence from top tackler Freddie Wilson and most improved Harrison Barnes kept Moldgreen at bay until they crossed to nick the spoils.

Heworth U7s produced a magnificent display with only seven players against a Featherstone Lions squad of 19.

Ben Blackburn was singled out for his storming runs but the whole team showed great spirit and skill in two narrow defeats, resulting in them all receiving man-of-the-match certificates from Featherstone.
