YORK Acorn Under-16s maintained their push for Yorkshire Junior League division three honours with a convincing 48-16 win at Doncaster Toll Bar.

The Blue and Golds lie fourth but are now five points behind leaders Castleford Lock Lane with three games in hand and the title race looks set to go down to the wire.

An exemplary performance saw York Acorn U14s topple leaders Whinmoor 24-10 to end the Warriors’ six-match winning run and take over top spot.

However, York Acorn U13s’ three-match winning run ended in a 50-18 loss at North Leeds Leopards.

A first-ever try by newcomer Gunesh Simsek earned the magic moment award and set New Earswick U12s on their way to victory over West Leeds.

Leeds replied with two quick tries but fantastic work from Ritesh Gurung and Louis Phillipou led to another try for the prolific Gurung.

Leeds again replied but, from the restart, a fantastic take from Oliver Douglas led to an All Blacks attack and a first try of the season for Jake Wiseman.

Gurung, the parent’s player of the match, then ran riot to finish with four on the day, and top tackler Luke Prenty also crossed.

Sam Briggs kicked three goals, while Oli Zuiderwijk was the most improved player.

George Metcalfe was man of the match, continually driving the ball in, as Heworth U11s beat Castleford Panthers 26-12.

Metcalfe was supported up front by Callum Dunmore and Kane Cavanagh in a fine team show.

Heworth tries came Luke Kane, from acting-half, the speedy Flynn Pagdin, spinning out of the tackle to touch down, the powerful Leon Mooring (2) and players’ player of the match Kai Brownlee, crashing over to open his account for the club.

Conversions were added by Myles Harrison, Cavanagh and Brownlee.

A top team performance brought York Acorn U10s an 18-12 victory over Dewsbury Celtic after an even game which at times got heated.

Acorn try-scorers were Kai Witty, after great running from Parka Lucas and Ethan Sutcliffe, Luke Rowell, after a great chase from Witty’s second-half kick-off brought possession in the red zone, and Oliver Guest.

Oliver Grimbley, who worked overtime in defence, was joint-man of the match with Witty, but all players shone.

Harvey Watson had his best game of the season as an inspired defensive performance brought Heworth U9s a comprehensive victory at Keighley Albion.

Watson and Keane Brough were the top tacklers while Oliver Pratt also shone in keeping the hosts at bay until two late tries.

Pratt, the coaches’ and opposition’s man of the match, also shone in attack scoring five of Heworth’s 11 tries.

Other scorers were parents’ man of the match Kian Ogilvie (2), including scintillating run, most improved player Oliver Lambert (2), whose try down the left brought the golden moment award, Watson and Liam Foster, hitting the ball at pace.

Man of the match Jay Richards got hard-working Heworth U10s’ reward with a try amid awful conditions at Townville.

Theo Walton, top tackler Eden Martin and Tom Clarke stood out.

Heworth U8s fell to defeat against Siddal in an entertaining game.

Villagers scorers were man of the match Harrison Barker (2), fending off several tackles, the excellent Harvey Barker and the impressive Ellis Cochrane.

Harvey Monks and debutant Keigan Cumberland also impressed.

Ever-improving Heworth U7s gave a brave performance against a good Dudley Hill side. Top performers were Harrison Barnes, Theo Edson and Ellis Harper.
