FIRST TransPennine Express has come forward to provide a major cash boost for junior teams at Heworth ARLC.

The train company, which has headquarters in York, has stepped in to provide £500 worth of funding which will go towards developing the teams' volunteer coaching staff.

The Elmpark Way club run teams from under-8s to senior level. Adrian Cook, a train driver working out of York's depot, requested the sponsorship, as his eight-year-old son has recently started playing there.

First TransPennine Express duly obliged, meaning coaches will be able take training sessions to the next level, helping to improve the children's playing abilities, skills, knowledge and personal development.

The sponsorship will also allow Heworth U8s to purchase training equipment and new kits.

Kate Lamb, community and business improvement manager at First TransPennine Express, said: "We are thrilled to provide funding for this local team.

"It's brilliant to see a community project such as this giving children the opportunity to play regular rugby while receiving a high standard of coaching. "

First TransPennine Express provides grants for charities and good causes related to the environment, young people and health. Grants of £500 are available and more details of how to apply can be found at the about section of www.tpexpress.co.uk
