MALTON & Norton under- 11s and Pocklington U12s suffered final heartache in the East Yorkshire Mini Rugby Union Festival at Percy Road.

Malton were beaten 20-0 in their final by Hullensians, while hosts Pocklington went down 15-0 to Hull.

Despite the losses, both teams have now qualified for the prestigious Yorkshire Cup.

Youngsters from eight clubs ā€“ Malton & Norton, Hull Ionians, Driffield, Goole, Hullensians, Pocklington, Beverley and Hull ā€“ took part in the two competitions, with the top four teams in the league going through to a semifinal play-off later in the day.

The U11s tournament started well for Malton as they topped pool one after winning all three group matches.

Firstly, Leon Cook, Alistair Keen (2), William Hicks and Luke Humphries scored tries in a 25-0 victory over Goole.

Keen then bagged another brace during a hard-fought 10-5 win over Hull Ionians, before another 10-5 triumph followed against Driffield thanks to tries from George Bell and Keen.

The second U11s pool was won by Hullensians with Pocklington as runners-up.

Both group winners continued their fine form in the semi-finals with George Welch, Bell and Keen all scoring tries as Malton went on to beat Pocklington 15-5.

In the other semi-final, Hullensians defeated Hull Ionians before going on to defeat a brave Malton team 20-0 in the final.

Matthew Humphries got Pocklington U12sā€™ tournament off to a flier, diving over for their first try against Hull. However, despite a strong second-half display they eventually went down 10-5.

Their second game of the tournament against Goole was tightly contested with Louis Sangwin scoring a priceless try in a 5-5 draw.

Driffield ended up winning the other pool, a point ahead of Hull Ionians and Beverley.

In the semi-finals, Pocklington beat Driffield 5- 0 thanks to a Josh Wood try before eventually losing the final 15-0 to a strong Hull side.

The trophies were presented by Pocklington RUFC first-team captain Ben Rees.
