THE countdown is on to one of the country’s largest football tournaments for girls.

Poppleton Juniors are hosting the 11th annual City of York Girls’ Football League tournament at their Millfield Lane base on Sunday, May 27.

Organisers are expecting about 60 teams to take part, with about 600 youngsters from under-10s to U16s playing 180 fixtures.

Matches are played in an initial league format before moving on to semi-finals and then a final.

The tournament gets under way at 9.30am for the U10s, U12s and U14s age groups and at 2pm for the U11s, U13s, U15s and U16s age groups.

The competition is being sponsored by local contract cleaning company Cleaning Services Unlimited.

A spokesman for the tournament said: “They have very generously agreed to be the main sponsor. In these difficult times, it is superb that we have this terrific level of sponsorship.”

Mike Clint, managing director of Cleaning Services Unlimited, said: “I am delighted to be able to support such a fantastic sporting occasion.

“I am a York person and I wanted to put something back into the community and this is a great way that I can show my support. I wish the girls all the best on the day.”
