A COMBINED Stamford Bridge girls Under-9s and U10s team matched hosts Wigginton in only their second competitive outing.

The team, formed only three months ago, underlined the progress made since their opening friendly against Shiptonthorpe in July by bouncing back from a 1-0 defeat in the first 15-minute match to win the second 3-0.

In the first game against Wigginton, Stamford Bridge looked the better side and nearly scored within the first few minutes when player of the match Luci Dempster found Jessica Feeham, whose effort was well saved.

Wigginton who opened the scoring against the run of play, but they were denied a second goal by Mia Rank’s great last-ditch tackle.

Bridge were unlucky not to level just before the end of the game after a superb run by Cara Durkin.

Stamford started the second game much brighter and within a few minutes took the lead when Emma Bettles found Lily Collins and she finished well.

The second goal stemmed from a good tackle in midfield by Chelsea Huxall. The ball broke to captain Maddy Smales, who coolly tucked it away in the bottom corner.

A couple of minutes before the end, Smales scored again for a deserved 3-0 victory.
