ASPIRING Woodthorpe Wanderers football stars have been given a pre-season boost by the Wetherby Whaler in York.

The fish and chip firm have sponsored Woodthorpe’s undertens team, who play in the York Mitchell Sports League, kitting out the youngsters with full strips for the new season.

Paul Hancock, a senior fryer at the Nether Poppleton restaurant, has a son who plays for the team and helped to instigate the backing.

Coach Wayne Martin said: “Receiving the kits was a great boost to the team and we’d all like to say a big thank-you to the Wetherby Whaler.

“We do some great work with young individuals in the area, which is made all the more possible with donations such as this.

The children are looking smart in their new kit and feeling incredibly proud to be wearing them.”

Janine Murphy, co-owner of the Wetherby Whaler, said: “At the Wetherby Whaler, we believe it is very important for us to support local clubs and initiatives and to put something back into the local area.

“Sport brings people together and is a very important part of the community, so we were more than happy to help when Paul approached us with the idea of supporting Woodthorpe Wanderers.
