THE 13th annual City of York Girls’ Football League tournament was the biggest bash yet.

A total of 74 teams took part in the competition at Poppleton’s Millfield Lane base, making it one of the largest girls-only football tournaments in the North East of England.

The majority of clubs were from North Yorkshire, with teams competing across seven age groups, with more than 700 girls playing a total of 196 matches on nine pitches with the help of 18 qualified referees.

The under-10s final was won in emphatic fashion by Fulford, 5-0 victors over Scotton Scorchers, while Boro Rangers were crowned U11s champions, beating Cleveland Juniors on penalties after a goalless draw.

Brayton Belles were the U12s winners, beating Knaresborough Celtic 1-0 in the final, while Carcroft Village were 2-1 winners over Scarborough Ladies in the U13s competition.

The U14s winners were Poppleton Tigers, 4-1 winners against Stamford Bridge Scorpions, while Norton & Stockton lifted the U15s trophy after a penalty shoot-out win over Hessle Town following a goalless draw.

Brayton Belles U16s made it a club double as they registered a 1-0 success against hosts Poppleton Tigers.

England junior players Chloe Maceck and Sophie Stamp, from the North Yorkshire Centre of Excellence, attended the tournament.

Maceck has won an international call-up at U16s level, with Stamp named in both the U17s and U19s squads.
