MILLFIELD Lane was the place to be as it hosted the fourth annual Poppleton Gala Festival of Football, where 83 teams from eight age groups competed in one of the biggest six-a-side football tournaments in the North of England.

The format of the tournament had the under-sevens, U9s, U11s and U13s competing on the first day, and the U8s, U10s, U12s and U15s in action on the second day.

The youngest two age groups competed in a fair play tournament with no standings or trophies being won, but the other six age group tournaments were competitive.

The system had teams divided into groups with the top two of each group advancing to play for the cup while the rest fought for the plate, ensuring all the teams were involved throughout the weekend.

The first trophy on offer on the first day saw Poppleton Tigers use home advantage to secure the cup in the U9s’ division.

In the U11s competition, Rawcliffe won the cup in their age group with Poppleton this time having to be content with victory in the plate.

Poppleton Tigers also won the U13s cup at the event to seal a successful Saturday for the club, with Old Malton St Mary’s claiming the plate in their age group.

On day two, North East side Boro Rangers sealed the U10s cup while Old Malton St Mary’s collected the plate for their second success over the weekend.

East Hull Saints’ trip to York was worthwhile as they secured the U12s cup with Otley Town winning the plate competition.

York-based sides were successful in the U15s with Woodthorpe claiming the cup and Haxby Town securing their age group’s plate.

The weekend was a success with hundreds of families turning out for the event.

The money raised over the two-day competition will go towards subsidising the fees paid by the club.
