York Railway Institute Girls Under 11’s football team were crowned champions of the City of York Girls Under 11’s Football League with the team playing 22 league games, winning 20, drawing two and losing none.

They were the top scorers in the league with 124 goals alongside being the toughest defence with only 12 goals conceded all season. To cap off a great season York Railway Institute defeated Wigginton Grasshoppers with a 5-1 victory at Millfield Lane to win the Under 11’s City of York Girls League Cup.

The club is already excited about next season with teams being entered in both the Under 11’s and Under 12’s leagues. In addition, the Under 10’s and Under 11’s need new kit for the forthcoming season and are looking for individuals, families, businesses or companies who are interested in sponsoring the teams.

A York RI player commented about the club: “I have really enjoyed my football this season and I think I’m getting much better. On 3rd May, The City of York Girls League Cup Finals day was held at Millfield Lane, Poppleton, where Under 11 ChampionsYork RI defeated Wigginton Grasshoppers with a 5-1 win to complete the club’s first ever girl’s league and cup double in the. For York RI, player of the match Alexia Dawson scored four goals with Chloe Jackson completing the scoring for the winners, a pairing that has resulted more than a hundred goals this season in the league and cup.

In the Under 12’s final, penalties were required to separate league winners Brayton Belles and Bishopthorpe White Rose, where Bishopthorpe held their nerve to win the shootout.

It was a close contest in the Under 13’s League cup final as Scarborough Ladies edged out Brayton Belles to win 3-2 in a very entertaining game at Poppleton.

In the Under 14’s and Under 16’s finals, Poppleton Tigers took advantage of their home pitch with a 5-1 victory against Fulford in the Under 14’s League Cup final and the Tigers beating league winners Kirbymoorside 5-3 in the Under 16’s final.

The City of York Girls Football League are holding the 13th Annual Girls only tournament on Sunday 8th June at Millfield Lane, Poppleton. The league have received more than 70 applications and the tournament is now full, where more than 700 girls from Under 10’s to Under 16’s will be playing across nine pitches.
