CAPTAIN Jack Marshall netted the winning penalty as Rawcliffe Tigers lifted the York FA Under-11s Junior Cup.

The Tigers drew 0-0 with Rufforth United in the final of the F1 Racing-sponsored competition and then edged the shoot-out 5-4.

Goalkeeper Joe Hodge had already saved one Rufforth spot kick and Marshall duly dispatched the winner at Poppleton’s Millfield Lane base.

Rawcliffe had the greater share of possession in the first 15 minutes, but Rufforth’s defence and goalkeeper Nathan Storr stood strong, repelling three corners in quick succession.

Good flowing football was a feature of the first half and Rufforth started the second half well.

Rawcliffe piled the pressure on again, but Josh Hussein’s snap-shot went wide of a post on 40 minutes.

The Tigers went even closer when Marshall hit the Rufforth bar and, despite end to end football, the match ended 0-0.

Marshall then took his chance to settle a match York FA officials hailed as “a great advert for the first season of mandatory 9 v 9 football for U11s in York and district.”

The trophy was presented by York FA secretary Barry Casterton.

The game was the first in the series of junior York FA finals, with four of the matches scheduled for York City’s Bootham Crescent base put back after the Minstermen qualified for the Sky Bet League Two play-offs.

The matches were scheduled for this coming Tuesday and Thursday, but the games have been delayed for a fortnight.

The York FA Junior Minor (U13s) Cup final between Fulford and Pocklington Town will now be played on Tuesday, May 20, kick off 6.15pm.

That will be followed on the same night by the York FA U15s Minor Cup final between Woodthorpe Wanderers and Rawcliffe Tigers, kicking off at 7.35pm.

That will be followed by the final of the York FA Senior Minor (U16s) Cup between Wigginton Grasshoppers and Pocklington Town Predators at 7.35pm.
