SELBY & District League football champions Monk Fryston Under-15s have conquered Europe.

The youngsters were cup winners at the International Youth Festival of Football 2014, staged in Paris, in conjunction with Disneyland Paris.

After the two days of group matches, Monk Fryston finished a respectable third in their group having played strong opposition from French teams Lognes and tournament favourites Val D’Europe, to tee up a semi-final encounter with Rangers.

Monk Fryston took an early lead in the semi-final, with Corey Littlefield forcing a keeper error to set up an easy tap in.

Charlie Pearson-Sinclair thought he had doubled Monk Fryston’s lead minutes later, only to have his effort disallowed for a foul on Rangers keeper.

The equaliser came in the second half, with a long range strike taking the game into a penalty shoot-out, which Monk Fryston edged 5-4 thanks to a fine save from Henry Burdekin.

That booked a final clash with Lognes, who started brightly but were unable to break down aresilient Monk Fryston outfit.

The opening goal came early in the second half when Richard Buckthorpe capitalised on a mistake at the back and calmly beat the keeper.

Moments later Littlefield doubled Fryston’s lead, showing his strength to hold off a defender and slot the ball beyond the keeper.

Lognes pulled a goal back with a towering header from a corner before Monk Fryston sealed the victory with a break-away goal from Harry Walton.
