YORK Schoolboys Under-11s missed the chance to clinch the West Yorkshire League title as they suffered their first home defeat of the season.

York went into the game against Leeds ‘A’ top of the league but, without prolific striker Will Jarvis, they lost 2-1 and must now await the outcome of the final fixture involving rivals Hull.

Liam White, Alfie Evans, Tom Eaton and Luke Jones defended superbly against an early Leeds onslaught, while there were some spectacular saves from goalkeeper Nathan Storr.

York then gained the lead when man of the match White  broke up a Leeds attack on the left, and Elliot Oliver and Jones combined to find Josh Hall. He drove at the defence and hit a stinging shot that was palmed away by the diving Leeds keeper, with Declan Racher netting the rebound.

In the final minute of the first period, Leeds were given a disputed free-kick and York’s inability to clear their lines led to a tap-in equaliser.

After the break, shots from Hall, Max Rigby, Jones and Racher failed to restore York’s lead, while a penalty appeal for a foul on Hall was waved away.

The third period started well for York, but a break away goal gave Leeds the lead.

With six wins and two losses in their first season in the West Yorkshire League, York top the table by one point.

If Sheffield beat Hull in their final game, York will be crowned champions. If Hull draw or win, then York will be runners-up.

Manager Matt Gore said: “We feel four decisions decided the outcome.

“The free-kick that led to the goal, not giving the penalty and two poor defensive decisions cost us the win which would have seen us champions.

“It’s still a possibility but Hull are now firm favourites. We will see what happens, but will now focus on the cup final against Hull.

“The York boys have been superb all season and deserve to finish with silverware.
