A LAST-GASP goal consigned York Schoolboys Under-15s to an agonising 2-1 home defeat against Sheffield.

The visitors started brightly and controlled the early exchanges, but York keeper Liam Powell was solid between the sticks.

York gradually gained a foothold with Ben Burdett again impressing in the central areas.

Elliott Fenton sprang the Sheffield offside trap and, with the keeper to beat, he squared the ball to Adam Wilson, but the striker could not convert from six yards.

A few minutes later, Wilson turned provider as he fed Sam Drake inside the area, only for the midfielder’s shot to hit a defender and deflect for a corner.

The deadlock was broken shortly after half-time, when the hosts failed to clear a corner and the ball was forced in through a crowded penalty area.

York’s response was swift as a long ball over the top caught out the defence and Adam Wilson beat the keeper with a low strike.

York then came under pressure but Bailey Fleming and man of the match Jarrad Benson were star performers at the back.

Will Hall also had another good game in midfield and as the clock ticked down York looked to have secured a valuable point from the game.

However, there was to be late drama as the visitors sent a ball into the box which was headed past secondhalf goalkeeper Dave Howard from close range.

Table-topping York Schoolboys U14s were denied victory by a late equaliser as they drew 1-1 at home to title rivals Sheffield.

In a goalless first half, York’s Dan Davison had one shot cleared off the line and another saved, while home keeper Adam Precious was also called upon to push the ball around a post and Sheffield had a goal disallowed.

York went ahead after the break, when Zac Lawrence’s free-kick was fumbled and Davison pounced to score.

Sheffield upped their game and, with three minutes remaining, a forward scored the leveller from outside the box.

York’s man of the match was Joe Kemp.

York Schoolboys U13s suffered only their second league defeat of the season as they crashed 4-0 at Sheffield.

The visitors were second best throughout, trying in vain to match the pace and power of their opponents.

But for some last ditch defending and a strong display by goalkeeper Cameron Bilham they may have conceded more.

Jack Atkinson picked up the man of the match award for a great second half showing.

York travel to Hull today for a cup quarter-final tie.
