HOSTS Poppleton Juniors FC were the first winners of the under-16s Poppleton (Munster) Invitation Trophy.
Touring side TuS Hiltrup, from the German city of Munster, competed alongside the host club and Pocklington, York RI, Hamilton Panthers, Rawcliffe and Wigginton Grasshoppers.
Pocklington Town and Poppleton finished top of the seven-team group and contested the final.
In a close fought match, Poppleton emerged as 1-0 winners with Gareth Fisher scoring the only goal.
The third place play-off went to penalties after Hamilton Panthers and TuS Hiltrup were locked at 0-0. Panthers missed two spot-kicks and Hiltrup won the shoot-out 4-2.
Trophies for the tournament were sponsored by Paul Mason, of Becketts Guesthouse, in Bootham.
Meanwhile, during their stay in this country, the Hiltrup squad attended the Premier League game between Middlesbrough and Manchester City, seeing the Riverside Stadium club triumph 8-1.
The tournament proved so successful that Poppleton are aiming to make it an annual event, and there are plans for Munster to host next year.

RACING’S equivalent of the Champions League has been given the thumbs-up by York Racecourse chief executive William Derby.
There were some brilliant matches on local stillwaters at the weekend with 100lb bags needed to make the top of the prize list.
