York meet North Yorkshire in big cricket final showdown

THE York and District Cricket League’s under-17 side are hoping to make it two Joe Lumb trophy wins in a row when they take on North Yorkshire tomorrow, writes Martin Durrant.

The team booked their place in the final at Stamford Bridge Cricket Club’s Low Catton Road ground by beating a strong Barnsley side at Clifton Alliance by six wickets in the semi-final.

“It should be a fantastic game, with two evenly matched sides”, said Norman Pearson, chairman of the York and District committee and president of the Joe Lumb competition.

“We played North Yorkshire in the first game of the season, and beat them by seven wickets, so we are looking forward to tomorrow.”

York are looking to retain the trophy they won last season, and make it three trophy wins in this competition for manager Kevin Ambrosen.

“They have a couple of Durham Academy players in their side, so we know it won’t be an easy game”, said Pearson.

“However, we’ve got players like captain Tom Collins, of Selby, and Andrew Simpson, of Heworth, who can be big for us on the day.”

York’s route to the final began with the aforementioned victory against North Yorkshire by seven wickets.

They continued their good form, defeating Aire Wharfe by six wickets and Bradford by 104 runs.

They then suffered a six-wicket loss to Heavy Woollen, while their game against Sheffield was rained off.

The final at Stamford Bridge will start at 12.30pm.

Collins captains a team that includes Simpson, Felix Adams, wicketkeeper Dan Barrett, Karl Carver, Josh Cruise, Oliver Gilbank, Matthew Hattee, Ryan Partington, Luke Ramsay, Oliver Sherwood. S Shepherd is 12th man.

The players have been asked to meet at the ground at 11.30am.
