YORK & District Under-15s sampled a reasonable campaign in the Yorkshire Junior Cricket Festival.

The representative outfit recorded two wins and just one loss after encountering a powerful Huddersfield team.

In their first outing, York & District took on the Aire/Wharfe League side.

Winning the toss, York & District opted to bat with openers Richard Brown and Tom Loten putting on an opening stand of 158 runs in 29 overs.

Loten was first to go for 61 while Brown followed soon after for a belligerent 70 with both openers particularly severe on any awry deliveries.

After the loss of another two quick wickets, late-order hitting from Jamie Butt, who finished unbeaten on 37, steered York & District to a competitive 235.

The Aire/Wharfe reply was emphatic - 42 runs smoked off the first six overs.

But a smart legside catch by wicket-keeper Ben Harris off the bowling of Danny Cass slowed the flow.

It proved a pivotal pouch as wickets fell regularly with Cameron Burdass taking 3-14 and Josh Sargent 3-19. Jack Williams chipped in with two wickets as the bowling was augmented by excellent fielding which strangled the reply to 170 all out.

Next up for York & District were the Wetherby League, who elected to bat.

Runs were hard to tally against a disciplined attack in which Jay Snowden and Felix Van der Borgh sent down 12 overs for just 35 runs and two wickets.

York & District spinners Ted Patmore and Hayden Bradley were in tandem for 18 overs, going for just two an over.

Patmore took a brace of victims and his ally one, while Alex Wilson seized two to send Wetherby teetering in for 110.

An early York & District wicket lifted Wetherby hopes, but Loten’s undefeated 64 and 45 not out from Patmore overhauled the chase in the 26th over.

The final grip game took York & District to Thongsbridge CC to play Huddersfield and expectations of a tough duel were realised.

Containing four county players, Huddersfield were too strong.

Huddersfield amassed 275-5, Yorkshire’s Alec Bateman profiting from a short boundary.

Burdass with two wickets was the pick of the Clifton Park attack, which suffered a below-par line.

York & District’s reply was a gallant 185 of which Brown maintained his fine form with 86, while Sargent weighed in with a breezy 33.

But it was too little as York’s last two wickets perished for the addition of a mere five runs - a poor end to an otherwise fine outing in which the youngsters proved excellent ambassadors as representatives of York & District junior cricket.
