HEWORTH beat Woodhouse Grange to lift the York & District Junior Cricket Association Hirepoint Plant & Tool Hire Under-15 President’s Cup.

Appearing in a junior final for the first time in many years, Woodhouse Grange were unable to emulate their senior team’s cup prowess as they were beaten by a more experienced Heworth side.

Heworth skipper Ryan Whitley won the toss and chose to insert Woodhouse.

This paid immediate dividends when the Elm Park Way-based team’s bowlers Will Fryer (2-5) and Whitley (3-9) made early breakthroughs in the Grange order.

Some accurate bowling supported by superb excellent fielding reduced the underdogs to 20-5.

The Woodhouse lower order battled hard, but Harry Sheppeard (4-6) finished the innings with a great spell of bowling to hold Grange to 48.

In reply, Fryer made 11 as Heworth reached 20 before they lost three quick wickets to give Woodhouse a glimmer of hope.

However, captain Whitley (14no) eased any nerves with two late boundaries to see his side comfortably home in the 13th over.

The Woodhouse youngsters put up a great fight in the field, with captain Tom Stubley ending with figures of 1-10.

Heworth were unable to make it a cup and league double when they were edged out by Sheriff Hutton Bridge in a tied game.

Bridge won the Hirepoint Plant & Tool Hire U15 Championship semi-final because they conceded fewer wickets than the Elm Park Way outfit.

Charlie Rae hit 50 not out and Joe Simpson made 16 not out in Bridge’s 115-4, with Sheppeard taking 3-9 in three overs.

Whitley top-scored with 27 not out, supported by Sheppeard (22) and Will Huffer (22) in a Heworth innings of 115-6.

Danny Cass was the pick of the Bridge bowlers, taking 2-16, backed by Joe Simpson’s 2-23.

York and Londesborough Park were due to contest the other semi-final.
