HOSTS St Olave’s School lost out by three wickets to RGS Newcastle in the final of their inaugural Super 8 cricket tournament.

Schools from across the North took part in the tournament with St Olave’s joined by Leeds Grammar, Bradford Grammar, Terrington Hall, Ampleforth, Yarm School and RGS.

The group matches were all closely contested and both groups went down to the final round of games to determine who would qualify. St Olave’s and RGS Newcastle topped their respective groups, with RGS facing Bradford Grammar in the first semi-final, while Ampleforth played St Olave’s in the second.

RGS and St Olave’s came out on top and the York school batted first in the final after losing the toss.

For the first time they underperformed with the bat, only managing 46-6 in their seven overs.

RGS approached their innings cautiously and St Olave’s picked up a few quick wickets to keep them in the game.

However, the strength in depth of the RGS side allowed them to knock off the runs with three wickets and 1.2 overs to spare.

The player of the tournament was RGS pupil Nathan Bygart.

He was top run scorer, hitting an impressive 92 not out in just seven overs against Yarm.

Gareth Sharp, head of cricket at St Olave’s and tournament organiser, said: “The tournament was a great success and was thoroughly enjoyed by all those who took part.

“As a school, we are really looking forward to hosting the tournament again in 2015, welcoming more schools to enjoy the atmosphere, as well as promoting enjoyable, creative and exciting junior cricket.”

Super 8s cricket started in Canberra, Australia, in 2005, and is based on the generic T20 format.
