MALTON & Old Malton beat holders York by one run in a nail-biting York & District Junior Cricket Association Under-15s President’s Cup final at Clifton Alliance.

Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Ryedale side made a good start to their innings, with openers Mathew Butler (47) and Morgan Fraser (34) putting on 63.

York spinner Tom Spearman then helped to stem the flow of runs, bowling tidily and ending with figures of 1-11 from his four overs.

Bradley Freer then contributed a fluent 26 not out to help his side to reach 135-4 at the end of their 20 overs.

The York reply was dealt an early setback when Keiron Bloor was bowled by Ryan Gaughan for 11, but a stand of 75 between Richard Brown (53 retired) and Cameron Burdass (33) meant York were neck and neck with Malton’s run rate.

However, a York collapse, caused by tight bowling from Toby Sercombe (2-22) and George Ullyott (1-16), handed Malton victory after York lost six wickets, including three runouts, for eight runs.

That left York requiring 11 runs off the last over and they could only manage nine.

The trophy and medals were presented by Paul Wilkinson, chairman of the York & District Junior Cricket Association.

Malton booked another clash with York in the final of the Hirepoint Plant & Tool Hire U15 Championship after beating Sheriff Hutton Bridge in the last four.

Hosts Malton lost the toss but restricted Bridge to 105-3 from their 20 overs.

Will Quinn struck a timely 49 not out to help his side reach a competitive score, while Bradley Freer was the pick of the Malton attack with 1-17 from his four overs.

In response, Malton captain Mathew Butler and Morgan Fraser made light work of the Bridge total, striking 54 not out from 39 balls and 23 not out respectively.

Malton won by seven wickets with 2.3 overs to spare, despite the best efforts of James Kay (1-18) and Harry Sutcliffe (1-14).

York batted first against Londesborough Park in a highscoring affair.

After some positive batting from Richard Brown, who made a fluent 50 not out, and two quickfire cameos from Ales Lilley (29) and Kieron Bloor (19), they posted a challenging score of 149-3 from 20 overs. J Hemingway and Nathan Saltmer both ended with figures of 1-14.

Ben Shingles led the Park reply with a determined 48 not out and was well supported by 39 from Nathan Saltmer and 17 from H Gamble.

However, Londesborough fell short at 120-4, with Cameron Burdass taking 2-19 and Tom Spearman 2-18.
