Knavesmire Primary are through to the final of the York West School Sports Partnership stage of cricket’s Drax Cup after finishing top in a group qualifier.

The competition involved four schools and was played at Acomb Cricket Club.

Knavesmire were unbeaten on the day, with their results including a narrow five-run victory over Rufforth (176-171), a 190-151 win against St Paul’s and a 135-113 triumph against Scarcroft.

Rufforth managed two wins, with their best result coming against Scarcroft - a 192-139 success - and beating St Paul’s by four runs, 133-129.

A second qualifier will be held on Wednesday, also at Acomb CC, involving Archbishop of York Junior School, Westfield, Carr Junior and St Barnabas.

The quartet will be trying to secure a play-off place in the partnership final, which will also be staged at Acomb on May 14.

More than 500 schools across Yorkshire and Teesside are registered for the 2015 Drax Cup.

Teams play in a series of events to produce four area winners - from the North, South, East and West.

These teams will play the 2015 Drax Cup Finals at Headingley on Friday, July 10, prior to Yorkshire Vikings’ game against Durham Jets in the NatWest T20 Blast.

The Drax Cup is sponsored by Drax and organised by Yorkshire County Cricket Club in conjunction with the Yorkshire Cricket Board, the Yorkshire Cricket Foundation and the Yorkshire Schools’ Cricket Association.
